Every child has the potential to dream, grow and lead. However, many adolescents in rural India grow up with confusion, a lack of guidance, social pressure, and silence. Topics such as adolescence, emotions, gender equality, relationships and reproductive health are often considered uncomfortable to discuss, leaving young people to depend on myths, peers or social media for information. Recognising this gap, CYDA & CIE India Automotive Ltd conducted an eight-day Life Skills Workshop under the WASH in Schools Project in Rudrapur, Uttarakhand, from 2–9 June 2026, reaching 34 adolescents (16 boys and 18 girls).
At the beginning of the workshop:
- Many students were shy, hesitant and afraid to express themselves.
- Students struggled to communicate their thoughts & emotions, leading to misunderstandings.
- Experienced bullying and peer pressure
- Influenced by social media.
- Gender stereotypes were still common, with girls expected to manage household chores while boys were encouraged to lead.
- A few students even admitted to trying cigarettes and gutkha.

Most worrying was the lack of scientific understanding of adolescence and reproductive health, despite these subjects being part of the school curriculum. Many teachers avoid these lessons because of discomfort or lack of confidence, leaving adolescents without reliable guidance during a crucial stage of life. The workshop adopted an interactive and participatory methodology. Through role plays, group discussions, games, poster-making and reflection sessions, the workshop covered the following.
Key themes covered :
- Communication and interpersonal skills
- Gender equality and social norms
- Adolescence and body literacy
- Human reproductive health
- Emotional wellbeing and self-awareness
- Understanding attraction versus love
- Bullying and conflict resolution
- Peer pressure and decision-making
- Substance abuse prevention
- HIV/AIDS awareness and child safety

CYDA created a safe and trusted learning space where students could ask questions without fear. As the days progressed, silence slowly transformed into confidence. Students who had once avoided speaking began sharing their thoughts, challenging harmful beliefs and supporting one another with understanding and respect. The impact was visible through conversations and also in measurable outcomes.

CYDA’s intervention successfully strengthened adolescents’ knowledge, life skills and positive behaviours. This initiative enabled participants to develop better communication skills, gain a deeper understanding of adolescence and improve awareness of substance abuse, bullying, and unsafe touch. It also enhanced their confidence to fight peer pressure and make informed decisions. Most importantly, the intervention raised positive behavioural change by reducing self-reported bullying behaviour and promoting respect, understanding and safer interactions among adolescents. The overall findings demonstrate that the intervention effectively empowered participants with the knowledge, confidence, and life skills needed to make healthy and responsible choices. It created a safe and trusted learning space where students could ask questions without fear. By the end of the workshop, students made heartfelt commitments:
“We will treat everyone equally.” “We will avoid bad habits.” “We will speak openly instead of hiding our problems.”
These simple promises reflected a strong transformation – from fear to confidence, from myths to knowledge and from silence to self-expression.

Aligning with the Vision of NEP 2020
This intervention strongly reflects the vision of India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes:
- Holistic development of learners
- Integration of life skills into education
- Promotion of critical thinking and socio-emotional learning
- Creation of safe and inclusive school environments
By going beyond textbooks and focusing on lived realities, the workshop translated policy into practical, impactful action on the ground. More importantly, it proved that when adolescents receive accurate information, guidance, and a safe environment, they become confident decision-makers capable of building healthier futures for themselves and their communities.
