A humble beginning
Born in a small village where opportunities were scarce and societal norms rigid, Durga Kuwar faced immense challenges from an early age. Growing up as a transgender individual in a deeply conservative environment meant rejection, discrimination, and exclusion were daily battles. Education was a privilege she could not afford, and acceptance was a dream that seemed unattainable. Abandoned by her own family, she was left to navigate a world that refused to see her potential.
Struggles in a new city
Determined to pave a new path, Durga moved to Pune, a city known for its economic opportunities but also its own set of struggles. With no financial security, limited skills, and no social support, she had to find a way to survive. Like many transgender individuals, she was expected to turn to begging or sex work—avenues imposed by societal stereotypes. However, Durga refused to be defined by these constraints.
Her first step into entrepreneurship came in the form of a small Chinese food stall. Hopeful yet inexperienced, she faced numerous difficulties—high rental costs, fluctuating customer flow, and stiff competition. The business was short-lived, and financial instability forced her to shut down. But Durga did not give up. She pivoted to selling vegetables from a handcart, a decision that marked the beginning of a new chapter.
Challenges on the Road to Stability
Running a vegetable business was not easy. She had to wake up before dawn, travel to the wholesale market, select the best produce, and then push her cart through the busy streets of Pune. Despite the physical labor and relentless struggle, she earned barely enough to survive. On some days, sales were so low that she wondered if she had made the right choice. Yet, she held onto her belief that hard work would eventually pay off.
But the challenges extended beyond business. Society still viewed her with suspicion, and customers were hesitant to buy from her. Prejudice followed her at every turn, making even the simplest tasks—like securing a good location for her cart—a constant battle. With no formal training in business and no financial backing, she was stuck in a cycle of survival rather than growth.
The Turning Point
Durga’s life took a transformative turn when she came across the Centre for Youth Development and Activities. Recognizing her potential and determination, CYDA provided her with crucial business training. Through structured mentorship, she learnt essential skills in market analysis, financial management, and customer engagement. More importantly, she gained the confidence to expand her business.
A revolutionary moment arrived when she received a grant to help her invest in venture. With this financial boost, she was able to buy fresh products in larger quantities and secure a better-quality handcart. This investment directly impacted her income, increasing her monthly earnings from Rs.10,000/- to Rs.15,000/-. More than just financial relief, this milestone affirmed her belief that she could succeed on her own terms.
Overcoming Obstacles with Renewed Strength
Equipped with knowledge and resources, Durga approached her business with a renewed sense of purpose. She expanded her customer base, enhanced her selling strategies, and began earning a steady income. Her success was not just about financial stability—it was about reclaiming her dignity in a society that had long overlooked her capabilities.
Despite these achievements, societal acceptance remained a challenge. Many still viewed her through the lens of prejudice, but she refused to let that discourage her. She actively engaged with customers, built trust within her community, and proved that she was no different from any other entrepreneur striving for success.
