On 21st May 2025, the city of Kannur witnessed a landmark moment in its journey towards social justice and inclusion. With the launch of its first-ever Rainbow Katta, the district embraced a vibrant and empowering platform dedicated to the voices, needs, and rights of the LGBTQIA+ community.
Hosted at the Healthline Project meeting hall and supported by the Project Office, this pioneering initiative was facilitated by Rainbowroots Foundation. It brought together 17 community members for a gathering that went beyond conversation—it was about dignity, recognition, and real-time change.
The Rainbow Katta initiative aims to create safe, inclusive, and consistent community spaces for LGBTQIA+ individuals. These gatherings are designed to promote access to essential resources, foster mutual support, and empower individuals to claim their rightful entitlements. In a state like Kerala, known for progressive transgender policies, many still face challenges in navigating bureaucratic systems. Rainbow Katta is a response to that reality—a bridge between policy and lived experience.
The meeting began with an overview of Rainbow Katta’s mission: helping community members access government services such as ID cards, PAN cards, bank accounts, and postal insurance policies. As participants began sharing their personal stories, a common thread emerged—a deep struggle with access. Despite supportive laws, the lack of implementation and sensitized government personnel continues to be a significant barrier.
But on this day, change took shape in real time. Two officers from the Kannur Head Post Office attended the session. Not only did they listen with empathy, but they also opened seven postal savings accounts and issued accident insurance policies for community members—on the spot.
For many, this was their first direct engagement with a government institution that saw them, respected them, and responded with meaningful action. The moment was emotional and empowering. It transformed the space from a discussion forum into a launchpad for dignity and visibility.
Community, Commitment, and Continuity
The session concluded with tea, snacks, and an atmosphere filled with joy, connection, and hope. The group unanimously decided to hold Rainbow Katta meetings twice a month going forward, ensuring that more individuals from the LGBTQIA+ community in Kannur can access the support and solidarity they deserve.
A follow-up meeting is already being planned, with the goal of reaching more people and expanding the scope of services offered through this unique platform.
Sandhya (Transgender) For me, as the organizer, this wasn’t just an event—it was a milestone. It reaffirmed my belief that when communities come together and institutions listen, transformation is possible. I am profoundly grateful to Rainbowroots Foundation for entrusting me with this responsibility and to everyone who showed up with open hearts and minds.
Rainbow Katta in Kannur may have been the first but it won’t be the last. This is just the beginning of a brighter, more inclusive journey.
Let’s keep the rainbow shining.
