A passion for Art Amidst challenges
Hamraj Sonkamble a final-year B.A. student, had always been passionate about art, particularly song writing and singing. He composed devotional and social songs that not only connected with people but also gave him a sense of fulfillment. However, despite his passion and talent, Hamraj faced numerous challenges on his journey. Being identified as bisexual in a society that often stigmatizes non-conventional identities, he found himself battling societal judgment and navigating a landscape that was not always welcoming to his creative pursuits. Hamraj’s life, though filled with artistic passion, was also marked by instability. Without a consistent income from his art, he struggled with job insecurity, and his dreams felt out of reach. He knew he needed something more — a way to sustain himself while staying true to his creative ambitions.
A bold leap into Entrepreneurship
It was in the face of this uncertainty that Hamraj decided to take a bold step toward entrepreneurship. Realizing that a steady source of income was essential for him to continue pursuing his dreams, Hamraj opened a small tea stall. The transition from being an artist to an entrepreneur was not that easy. The journey was filled with challenges – securing the capital to launch the business, attracting customers, and navigating the complicated legal processes. But despite these hurdles, he was determined to create something that would give him both financial stability and the freedom to continue his artistic endeavors.
The idea of running a tea stall, though simple, required more than just enthusiasm. It involved learning the ins and outs of business management, customer service, and budgeting. Hamraj felt lost at times, unsure of where to turn for guidance in this new venture. Here, he found support in from the YouthAid Foundation, an organization dedicated to empowering young entrepreneurs.

The support provided him with essential training in business planning, finance, and growth strategies — skills he had never learned during his years of artistic pursuits. This training gave him the confidence to manage his tea stall and also provided a clear roadmap for scaling his business. The mentorship and resources were crucial, and the Rs.10,000/- grant enabled Hamraj to purchase essential supplies to launch his tea stall.

Looking back on his experience, Hamraj readily recognizes the significant impact, the organization had on his entrepreneurial journey. This emotional and practical support was critical to Hamraj’s success. It not only helped him navigate the challenges of entrepreneurship but also gave him the self-belief to overcome setbacks. Hamraj’s confidence grew and with that confidence, his business flourished.

Hamraj’s life has been completely transformed. What started as a small tea stall is now a thriving business, providing him with the financial independence he always sought. The stability of his business has allowed Hamraj to continue his work as an artist without the constant pressure of financial instability.
