Creating real change for the LGBTQIA+ community takes consistent effort, meaningful collaboration, and inclusive support systems. Vikram Gaikwad’s (name changed) journey reflects how collective action between civil society and public institutions can open doors to opportunity and equality. United Way Hyderabad, in collaboration with CYDA, has been implementing focused programs to build inclusive spaces. Pritesh Kamble, Director of Rainbow Roots Foundation (a sister organization of CYDA works towards the upliftment of the LGBTQIA+ community.), through Vikram’s story, shows how access to guidance, resources, and encouragement can help individuals build their future and promote social acceptance.
Facing Rejection, Finding Purpose
Growing up in Pune, Vikram always knew that living as a gay man came with challenges. From a young age, he encountered social stigma, harsh judgments, and rejection. These experiences made it hard for him to imagine a future where he could live openly and independently.
After completing his education, he stepped into the professional world. Despite being qualified, finding work was difficult. Employers often ignored his abilities and focused instead on his identity. He soon realized that building his own business might be the only path forward. “I knocked on many doors, but most remained closed. People did not see my potential beyond my identity,” Vikram recalls.
He also thought of starting his own business, which would not only provide him with a livelihood but also help create his own identity. But even this was full of obstacles—he lacked money, guidance, and support to start something on his own.
Finding Support, Building Skills
Vikram’s turning point came when a friend introduced him to CYDA. He participated in the Entrepreneurship Development Program (EDP), where he received training in business planning, budgeting, and marketing. He also received emotional support and mentorship, which gave him the confidence he had long been missing. With a small grant from the organization, he bought a sewing machine and began tailoring clothes from his home. This was the start of a new chapter. Vikram focused on delivering quality work and slowly began gaining customers. His income increased. More importantly, his confidence and sense of self-worth also grew.
Creating Opportunities for Others
As Vikram’s tailoring business grew, he started offering work to others from the LGBTQIA+ community who were facing similar struggles. He understood their challenges and wanted to make sure they didn’t feel as alone as he once did. His small shop became a place where people could work with dignity and feel respected for who they are. Today, Vikram is financially independent and actively involved in awareness and mentorship programs. He regularly supports CYDA’s outreach efforts and speaks to youth about believing in themselves and taking bold steps toward change.
Inspiring the Next Generation
Vikram hopes his journey will inspire others not to give up, no matter how difficult the path may seem. “I know what it feels like to be underestimated, to face rejection, and to struggle against the odds. But I also know that your circumstances do not define your potential—you do” Vikram shaes. His story shows that when individuals get the right push at the right time, they can break through barriers and create lasting change—not only for themselves but for their entire community.
