The Power of Second Chance

Puja Matre, Gender Expert, CYDA

Kavita Nitin Salve began living with her grandparents and uncle in Wathur Fata, Partur, Jalna district at the age of two. Growing up away from her parents was not easy but her uncle supported her education and taught her patience, courage, and self-reliance.

In 2017, while studying in her second year, Kavita got married. Like every young woman, she dreamed of a happy life, but her marriage brought many challenges. Her husband suffered from a spinal problem and could not work. The entire responsibility of the family fell on her. Soon after, she became pregnant, but instead of care and support, she faced doubts, blame, and stress from her in-laws.

At the same time, she was looking after her maternal aunt who had kidney failure. Even during pregnancy, she cared for her aunt with love. Yet her in-laws did not allow her to return home for delivery. With no support, she gave birth to a daughter. But the insults and rejection continued, deeply affecting her mental health. She grew weak, hopeless, and had to take medicines for stress and anxiety.

During this painful time, a neighbour introduced her to CYDA (Centre for Youth Development and Activities). At first, she was full of fear and doubt. Years of suffering had broken her confidence. Still, she decided to attend CYDA’s Soft Skills Training. That decision changed her life.

For the first time in years, Kavita felt safe and heard. She learned to speak openly, manage her time, and believe in herself. She realised that becoming financially independent was the only way to live with dignity. With new confidence, she joined CYDA’s Housekeeping Course. After completing it, she secured a job at Raj Cloth Centre with a monthly salary of ₹10,000.

Life was still not easy. She had to care for her husband, raise two daughters, and manage work. She had discovered her inner strength through the program.

Today, she balances her family and work. She is raising her daughters with love, supporting her husband, and running her household with confidence. The stress that once crushed her has reduced, and she feels at peace. Kavita says, “CYDA gave me a new path in life. I learned to believe in myself, to speak, and to work. Today, I am proud that I can take care of my family with dignity.”

Her trainer adds, “Kavita is one of the most inspiring women we have trained. She came to us full of fear, but she left with courage and hope. Her story proves that change is possible for every woman.”
