The Change Began with Her

This case study showcases Pooja Bhoi’s journey from facing societal challenges to achieving economic independence through the Non-Traditional Livelihood program. With Bajaj Finserv’s support, CYDA through this initiative provides equal opportunities and recognizes individuals based on their skills, regardless of gender. Her transformation demonstrates how access to opportunities, skill-building and belief in one’s potential can redefine a woman’s place in society. This impact story has been documented by Yogesh Nerpagar and Avinash Sonawane of CYDA.

In India, socio-economic challenges, patriarchal mindsets, and rigid gender roles often limit women’s participation in diverse career opportunities. The concept of Non-Traditional Livelihoods challenges this norm by encouraging women to enter sectors traditionally dominated by men-such as mechanical work, driving, construction, and technical roles. NTL programs equip women with skills, confidence, and exposure to break barriers and become economically independent. This is not just about earning money-it’s about dignity, choice, and redefining societal roles.

Among the many young women who embraced this path is Ms. Pooja Bhoi, whose story of transformation through CYDA’s NTL program is both inspiring and deeply relevant to the youth of today.

Living on the Edge

At just 23, Pooja Bhoi had already faced many struggles. She lives with her husband in a small rented house on Pumping Road in Nasik. Her husband works in a private company in the MIDC area.

Prior to joining the program, Pooja had no stable income and got little support from her family. Life was not easy. She had studied up to 10th grade, which is a big achievement for girls in her area. Though she wanted to study more, she could not continue because of household responsibilities.

The First Step – Connecting with CYDA

During a community outreach survey, CYDA’s mobilization team met Pooja. They spoke to her about Non-Traditional Livelihood opportunities, particularly how young women could break into roles traditionally held by men. At first, Pooja listened quietly, not sure if it was right for her. But something gave her hope. A few days later, she made a bold move-she called CYDA team and registered for the NTL program and soft skill training. That call marked the beginning of her transformation.

Facing the Inner Storm

Despite taking the first step, Pooja faced many challenges. Her limited education became the reason for her low confidence, making it hard for her to move forward. Although her husband supported her, she faced humiliation from her relatives and neighbours. They thought it was inappropriate for a woman to work at a petrol pump. She faced criticism from her community, but the soft skills training from CYDA helped her overcome these challenges. She learned valuable skills like effective communication, workplace etiquette, and building confidence in her abilities.

Turning Point – The Job Interview

Post-training, CYDA identified a job opportunity that seemed ideal for Pooja-a position as a Petrol Pump Attendant at Urja Petroleum, right in her locality. With proper guidance, she attended her first-ever formal interview and was selected. She was overwhelmed to earn a monthly salary of Rs . 9000, a respectable earning for someone who had been unemployed just weeks ago.

Empowered and Employed

Today, dressed in her petrol pump uniform, Pooja feels proud and confident. Her job is more than just a means of livelihood; it’s a badge of honour. Every litre she fills, every customer she greets, represents her resilience and hard-earned independence. For the first time, she is contributing to her family’s income and planning a better future. Her confidence has grown, and so has the respect she commands, not just at her workplace but also within her home.

Pooja’s success is quietly but surely inspiring other women in her locality. Where there was once scepticism and societal judgment, there is now curiosity and admiration. Her story is not an isolated one; it is a reflection of many young women waiting for a chance, a door to open, a hand to hold. Alongside a dignified job, this program gave her a voice, confidence, and the freedom to dream again.
