Struggling to find his true Identity
From a young age, Sammy struggled to fit into society’s rigid norms. His mannerisms, expressions, and even his voice did not align with what others considered “normal.” At school and in public, strangers would often pass judgment on him, making him question his own identity. However, as time passed, Sammy began to find solace in the idea that he was not alone. Connecting with others in the LGBTQIA+ community gave him a newfound sense of confidence.
“It was not just about me being different—it was about others making me feel that my difference was something to be ashamed of. It was not easy to hold my identity at first, but over time, I realized that I did not need to fit into a mold to be valid. I am who I am, and that’s my strength,” Sammy reflects…..
Starting his Tailoring Business
The real turning point in Sammy’s life came in 2020, when financial pressures led him to take a leap of faith and start his own tailoring business. Sammy had honed his craft by working under another tailor for years. He understood the intricacies of the trade, from selecting the best cloth samples to mastering measurements with accuracy. Equipped with these skills and some savings, Sammy took the leap to become his own boss in Hinjewadi.
Starting a new business was not without challenges, as the competition was tough. Many customers already had their loyal tailors, and he was just another newcomer trying to make his mark in the market. The biggest challenge was attracting customers. To make matters worse, the COVID-19 pandemic created an atmosphere of uncertainty. People were hesitant to spend money, and Sammy had to fight to even get his foot in the door.
Slow growth, but steady effort
Initially, Sammy’s business struggled. He relied on family referrals and the few clients he had worked with in the past. However, this approach provided only slow growth. Sammy knew he needed to get creative to increase his visibility. He made the decision to invest in advertising, even though this meant working without profits during festivals. “I knew it was a risk, but I had to take it. If I do not push for growth now, I might never get the chance,” he says.
