Rising Crime and Eroding Values: A Call to Action for a Better Society

By Soumyashree Mohanty

The world is facing a growing concern: rising crime and eroding values. India, with its rich cultural heritage, is no exception. The National Crime Records Bureau reported over 4.4 million cognizable crimes in 2021, a 28% increase from the previous year. Crimes against women, violent crimes, and cybercrimes are on the rise, reflecting a growing sense of insecurity and a decline in societal harmony.

The Erosion of Values: A Root Cause

As we analyze the reasons behind this rising tide of violence, it becomes clear that the problem is deeply rooted in the fabric of our society. The erosion of values, such as empathy, compassion, and responsibility, is a significant contributor to this issue. Our education system, focused on producing high scorers, has neglected the importance of imparting values and life skills. The breakdown of traditional family structures and the influence of digital media have further exacerbated the problem.

Rebuilding Our Society: A Call to Action

It’s time for us to take responsibility and work towards rebuilding our society. The Centre for Youth Development and Activities (CYDA), a non-governmental organization, is leading the way. Through its Youth4Change movement, CYDA empowers young people with the skills, values, and opportunities they need to become change agents.
