Punjab’s Worst Flood Since 1988

Date: 31st August 2025

Punjab is reeling under the worst floods since 1988. More than 1,000 villages are submerged, and crops across 3 lakh acres have been destroyed, leaving thousands of farmers in despair. The overflowing Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi rivers have unleashed devastation across Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, Pathankot, Fazilka, Kapurthala, and Hoshiarpur. Thousands have been displaced, and three lives have already been lost.

Preliminary reports show that 41,099 acres of farmland in Fazilka alone lie ruined. Families dependent on daily labor and small-scale farming have seen their livelihoods vanish overnight.

CYDA Volunteers on the Ground

In this hour of crisis, CYDA volunteers reached Gurdaspur to begin relief work. On 31st August, our volunteer Chandan visited 17 flood-affected villages including Dera Baba Nanak, Dharmkot Patan, Gurchak, Kalanaur, and Chanduwadla. What he witnessed was heartbreaking:

  • Families are stranded in waterlogged homes, some surviving on rooftops under makeshift tarpaulin shelters.
  • Children and the elderly are waiting on highways, hoping for passing vehicles to stop and share food or water.
  • Livestock are left hungry, and communities are coming together to share fodder to keep them alive.

Yet, amidst the despair, there was also courage.

Chandan recalls: “What moved me deeply was the resilience of the people. I saw Punjabis from nearby districts bringing food, water, and even fodder. Yet, despite this brotherhood, the needs are far greater than what is reaching the villages.”

The Three Urgent Needs

From our close observations, three items are most urgently required to restore dignity and hope to these families:

  1. Clothes – Many have been wearing the same set for days. One woman wept, saying: “It has been five days, and I am still in the same clothes.”
  2. Drinking Water – Current supplies are inadequate, leaving families desperate for safe water.
  3. Dry Food – While Gurudwaras provide meals during the day, families go to sleep hungry at night. Dry rations and food packets can save lives.
