Nurturing Leadership: Ansh’s Growth through YDP

Kajal Fale,  Executive, CYDA

Inculcating leadership among youth is essential for the overall development and progress of a nation. Young people are powerful agents of change who bring new ideas, energy, and innovation to society. When they are given opportunities to lead, they contribute to social, economic, and community development in meaningful ways. However, leadership skills do not develop automatically. Young people require continuous support, mentoring, and guidance to recognise their strengths and nurture their potential.

This article shares the story of a young leader who not only developed strong leadership qualities but also went on to mentor others. Through dedication, learning, and the right support system, this youth transformed personal growth into collective impact, inspiring peers and strengthening the community around them.

Ansh Waghmare, a 15-year-old youth from the Ramtekdi area, has emerged as a confident and responsible young leader through his continuous engagement with the Youth Development Program (YDP) over the past two years. Currently studying in the 10th standard, Ansh has consistently demonstrated dedication toward both his education and personal development.

Initially joining YDP as a participant, Ansh gradually became an active member of the Yuva Sahyogi (Youth Leaders) group. Through regular sessions on leadership, communication, critical thinking, and social awareness, he developed greater clarity in decision-making, improved listening skills, and the confidence to express his thoughts openly. He began reflecting more deeply on social issues and developed the courage to stand up for what is right within his family and community.

A significant part of his journey was attending the Entrepreneurship Training conducted under YDP. The training helped him understand basic business concepts, idea development, budgeting, and presentation skills. Inspired by this exposure, Ansh transformed his hobby of painting and sketching into a small entrepreneurial initiative. He began creating customized paintings and sketches based on client requirements and started selling them within his community and network.

Ansh further showcased his entrepreneurial idea during the Youth Hackathon organized under YDP. He confidently presented his small business model. His participation in the hackathon strengthened his public speaking, confidence, and innovative thinking.

Demonstrating strong leadership initiative, Ansh also played a key role in reactivating an inactive youth group in Ramtekdi. He independently planned and organized introductory meetings, motivated members to rejoin, and explained the impact of YDP based on his personal experience. While YDP staff provided background support, Ansh himself led the planning and execution.

Ansh’s journey reflects holistic youth leadership development. Today, he shows clear thinking about his future and has begun defining what he wants to achieve in his career. His exposure to leadership and entrepreneurship has broadened his aspirations beyond conventional pathways. Importantly, his perspective toward women and gender roles has significantly evolved. Through YDP’s gender equality sessions, Ansh developed a more sensitive and respectful understanding of gender issues.

Ansh’s transformation from a participant to a proactive youth leader highlights the power of structured mentorship, capacity-building, and supportive guidance. His journey stands as a strong example of how the right opportunities can empower youth to become confident leaders, socially aware citizens, and economically independent individuals.
