Women across India continue to struggle for recognition of their abilities. Their skills often remain undervalued, and opportunities in non-traditional fields are limited. To address this gap, CYDA, in collaboration with Bajaj Finserv, has developed the Non-Traditional Livelihood Program, which provides women with opportunities to acquire new skills, build confidence, and earn a sense of dignity within their homes and communities.
A Life of Struggle
Domestic violence, financial struggles, and the responsibility of raising a child alone – Srushti Gangaram Gaikwad from Pune faced them all. Yet, with determination and the proper support, she transformed these challenges into stepping stones toward a better life.
Srushti, a single mother, made the difficult decision to leave her husband after enduring violence at home. It was not easy but she chose to stand up for her rights. She returned to her parents’ house. But survival was a struggle. Her mother worked as a house help, and the income was too little to cover household needs. Srushti wanted to support her family, but with no job experience, she found herself in a challenging situation.
Most employers rejected her applications as she did not have previous work experience. Alongside money problems, she also carried the emotional pain of past abuse. With a young son to care for and an unwell mother depending on her, the pressure was enormous.
Many jobs required a fixed 9-to-5 schedule, which clashed with her duties as a parent. She needed a shift-based role that would enable her to balance her home and work life. Despite these barriers, she remained determined and continued to seek options that could provide her with both income and time for her family.
Finding Hope
Her determination to lead a dignified life became successful when she came across the Non-Traditional Livelihood Program of CYDA and Bajaj Finserv. At first, she doubted her ability to succeed in a new field. But with encouragement from the CYDA team, she decided to take the step. They assured her that she could learn the skills through training, and this reassurance gave her the confidence to move ahead.
Through the program, she received both technical and soft skills training. She learned effective workplace communication, built confidence, and acquired the practical knowledge necessary for employment. Soon, she secured a job as an Assistant at a petrol pump. She chose the evening shift, which allowed her to take care of her son during the day and still earn a regular income. The job gave her stability and pride, something she had been missing for a long time.
A Journey of Change
Today, Srushti earns Rs 10,000 each month. The income has eased financial pressure at home and given her independence. More importantly, she now feels respected and capable, both as a mother and as the primary provider of her household. She has demonstrated that it is possible to rise above hardship, break stereotypes, and prove that women can succeed in roles that go beyond traditional expectations. Her journey proves that with support, training, and determination, women can create a better future for themselves and their families.
