Internships are often seen as a stepping stone to professional growth, but for me, my time at CYDA was much more than that—it was a transformative journey that reshaped my understanding of social issues and community development. Stepping into the world of grassroots activism, I witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by marginalized communities and the power of collective action in bringing about meaningful change. This experience not only deepened my awareness of critical social issues but also ignited a passion for contributing to sustainable development. In this article, I share how my internship at CYDA opened my eyes to the impact of community-driven initiatives and strengthened my resolve to be a part of the change.
Engaging in volunteer and internship experiences often provides us with a new perspective on social issues and community development. My time working with CYDA (Center for Youth Development and Activities) was no exception. This experience profoundly shaped my understanding of societal challenges and the significance of empowerment-driven initiatives.
CYDA—an organization dedicated to supporting youth development activities in many states of India. CYDA is widely recognized for its impactful initiatives in empowering young minds, especially teenagers and young adults helping them shape a better future for themselves and society. Through their various programs, CYDA has been a beacon of hope for countless individuals, providing them with the tools and support they need to build better lives.
During my time with CYDA, I had the privilege of visiting two of their remarkable centers—10 Stitch Studio and Mansuki. Each visit provided invaluable insights into the role of community-driven initiatives in addressing pressing social issues.
At 10 Stitch Studio, I had the honor of interacting with over 30 inspiring women—each one a living testament to resilience and self-empowerment. These women were learning and mastering tailoring skills, which not only helped them become financially independent but also instilled confidence in their abilities. Their dedication to their craft and their unwavering determination to create a better life for themselves was truly awe-inspiring.
One key takeaway from this experience was understanding that economic empowerment is a crucial step towards social progress. These women were not just learning to sew; they were reclaiming their independence, breaking stereotypes, and uplifting their families. Their stories of struggle, strength, and success reinforced the idea that when someone is determined to grow, they not only transform their own lives but also bring prosperity to everything around them. It was a powerful lesson on how community support and access to skill development can change lives.
The Power of Positivity: Mansuki Center
At Mansuki, we encountered a group of beautiful, energetic souls whose positivity and warmth made our visit even more special. Their enthusiasm and zest for life reminded us of the true essence of happiness—finding joy in the little things and lifting each other up. Many of the individuals at this center had faced hardships, but their ability to remain hopeful and spread positivity was inspiring.
One of the most valuable lessons I learned here was that mental well-being and emotional support play an equally significant role in community development. While financial independence and skill-building are essential, emotional resilience and a supportive environment are just as crucial for overall well-being. Seeing firsthand how the Mansuki Center provided a safe and nurturing space for individuals to express themselves and grow emphasized the importance of holistic community initiatives.
Broader Lessons on Social Issues and Community Development
This experience with CYDA reinforced several key lessons about social issues and community development:
Empowerment is Multifaceted – True empowerment comes in many forms, from skill-building and economic opportunities to emotional support and mental well-being. Addressing social issues requires a comprehensive approach that caters to all these aspects.
Grassroots Efforts Make a Difference – Change does not always come from large-scale policies or organizations alone. Local initiatives and community-driven efforts play a significant role in driving social progress. Centers like 10 Stitch Studio and Mansuki prove that small, dedicated programs can create lasting impact.
Resilience is the Key to Transformation – Meeting individuals who overcame tremendous challenges yet continued to strive for a better life taught me that resilience is one of the most powerful forces in community development. When people are given the right opportunities and a support system, they can overcome even the toughest obstacles.
The Role of Education and Skill Development – Providing people with education and skills does more than just help them earn a living; it gives them confidence, a sense of purpose, and the ability to contribute meaningfully to society. Investment in skill development and vocational training should be a priority for any community development initiative.
Social Responsibility Starts with Us – Organizations like CYDA are doing phenomenal work, but sustainable change requires wider community participation. Whether through volunteering, supporting local businesses, or simply spreading awareness, each of us has a role to play in making a difference.
These visits were more than just experiences; they were eye-opening moments that reinforced the power of empowerment, community, and social responsibility. Through CYDA, we witnessed firsthand how impactful initiatives can transform lives, one step at a time.
This journey has deepened my understanding of social issues and strengthened my belief in the importance of grassroots efforts, resilience, and collective action in driving meaningful change.
