Lighting the way – A Journey from repair shop to successful Entrepreneur

Nanda’s inspiring transformation from a small repair shop owner to a successful LED bulb entrepreneur was made possible through the support of Bajaj Finserv, whose continued partnership in the EDP project in Nashik has been instrumental in empowering grassroots entrepreneurs like her. Avinash Sonavane, Project Coordinator at CYDA, writes about how he played a pivotal role in mentoring and guiding participants through this journey.

Nanda Khairnar, a determined woman from Sinnar Block, had always worked hard to provide for her family. With only a 10th-grade education, she had built her small electrical repair business. Specializing in repairing fans and mixers, Nanda managed to keep her shop running, but there was always something holding her back from achieving her dreams of expanding her business.

Challenges

She was stuck in a cycle of limited opportunities, and while she worked tirelessly, the income she earned never seemed to grow beyond a certain point. The services she offered have been limited because of her narrow skill set, leaving little room for growth or expansion. The lack of advanced skills, business knowledge and resources made it difficult for her to explore new avenues of revenue or even upgrade her business to meet the changing demands of the market.

The Turning Point

The turning point came when CYDA stepped in with a life-changing opportunity. CYDA, known for empowering grassroots entrepreneurs, saw Nanda’s potential and enrolled her in a comprehensive training under Non-Traditional Livelihood program. This intervention would equip her with skills, knowledge and resources needed to develop her business. This approach was not just a course in technical skills; it was a holistic approach that combined hard skills, soft skills, and entrepreneurial training. This comprehensive support was precisely what Nanda needed to break free from her limitations.

Skill Development and Resource Support

1.Soft Skills Training

Nanda’s first step was attending workshops designed to improve her communication and business management skills. These sessions focused on building confidence when interacting with customers, suppliers and other business stakeholders. She learnt the art of negotiation, customer service, and even how to manage her time more efficiently. These soft skills were critical in helping her step out of her comfort zone and build relationships that would benefit her business.

2.Hard Skill Training

Nanda received hands-on instruction in Wash Mitra and LED bulb making. This new skill set opened doors to a completely different market—LED bulbs were in high demand, and Nanda could now manufacture them herself. This diversification was key to her business’s growth. It allowed her to cater to a broader customer base, move beyond repairs, and enter the manufacturing industry.

3.Entrepreneurship Development Program

CYDA also partnered with the Youth Aid Foundation to offer a specialized Entrepreneurship Development Program. This part of the training was focused on marketing, business planning, and strategies for sustainable growth. Nanda learnt how to position her business in the marketplace, effectively manage her finances, and develop long-term business goals.

4.Provision of Resources

One of the most significant aspects of CYDA’s support was the provision of practical resources. Nanda was given a toolkit and raw materials to start her own LED bulb manufacturing unit. These essential resources allowed her to set up her operations without the need for a large initial investment, which had always been a barrier for her before. With the necessary tools in hand, Nanda was ready to put her new skills to work and launch her manufacturing business.

Transforming Knowledge into Action

With her new skills and resources, Nanda wasted no time. She quickly set up her LED bulb manufacturing unit, putting everything she had learnt into action. The technical training, she had received allowed her to produce quality LED bulbs and the business skills helped her manage her operations smoothly. Nanda now understood the significance of marketing and branding. She began promoting her LED bulbs to local businesses and households, positioning her product as a cost-effective and energy-efficient solution. Her communication skills helped her build trust with customers, and soon her products were in high demand.

No longer just a small repair shop owner, she is now earning over Rs.15,000/- per month from her new LED bulb business. Her family was finally experiencing the financial stability that had seemed out of reach for so long.

The Impact: A New Beginning

A small electrical repair shop has now transformed into a successful LED bulb manufacturing business. Through CYDA’s intervention, she has gained technical expertise and also the confidence to manage and grow her business.Nanda is no longer bound by the limitations of her old business model. Her newfound skills in business management and manufacturing have opened up a world of possibilities.

In her own words, Nanda says, “The training and support provided by CYDA, transformed my life. The skills I gained and the resources I received have opened up new opportunities for me. My LED bulb business has brought stability and pride to my family.”

The Power of Empowerment

Nanda’s journey offers several valuable lessons for aspiring entrepreneurs. First, skill diversification is crucial for growth. By learning new skills, small business owners can break free from traditional business models and explore untapped markets, opening doors to new opportunities. Second, holistic support plays an essential role in ensuring long-term success. A combination of technical training, business knowledge, and practical resources equips entrepreneurs with the tools they need to thrive. Nanda’s story also highlights the importance of empowering women entrepreneurs. Focused programs that address the unique challenges women face can pave the way for their success in business. Lastly, collaborations with organizations like the Youth Aid Foundation can amplify the impact of development programs, creating a network of support that helps entrepreneurs reach their full potential.
