The Silent Struggles of an Unsung Hero
Arush a 31-year-old trans man from Pune, has been a series of battles—against societal judgment, familial rejection, and financial hardships. With limited financial resources and lack of family support, Arush realized that his government job alone was not enough to fund his transition and medical treatments. To secure his future and take charge of his own life, he decided to start a (Snacks center) vada pav stall. He works at the Pune Municipal Corporation during the day and manages a modest vada pav stall in the evenings, all in an effort to secure his future and fund his transition. The glaring eyes of society often reduced him to a label— “Hijra”—without recognizing the depth of his identity. His family, unwilling to accept his truth, continued to expect him to conform to a life that did not reflect who he truly was. Despite these challenges, Arush stood firm, refusing to be defined by anyone else’s expectations.
The Turning Point: Finding Hope among adversity
Arush’s life took a pivotal turn when he learnt about CYDA’s business training program through a friend. The program, is been designed to empower aspiring entrepreneurs, became the turning point in his life. Through comprehensive workshops, he gained business insights and also a fresh sense of direction. He discovered that entrepreneurship was not just a means to earn a living—it was a path to self-reliance and dignity.
I believe CYDA’s training sessions should be held more frequently to encourage and inspire more people to explore the transformative power of business. Arush said.
With the support of CYDA, Arush received a grant of Rs.10K, that enabled him to invest in essential utensils and groceries for his vada pav stall. This financial boost marked the beginning of a new chapter in his life.
Challenges:
Despite his determination, running a business came with its own set of challenges. A tragic murder occurred on the street where he had set up his stall and his chef became involved in the investigation, leading to the temporary closure of his business. Additionally, operating without a proper license restricted him to his own neighbourhood.
Lighting the way to Financial Security
The most remarkable part of his journey was the impact on his financial stability. Before starting his business, Arush earned around Rs.24,000/- per month. However, through his entrepreneurial efforts, his income nearly doubled to Rs.45,000/- to Rs.49,000/- per month. This surge in earnings was a financial milestone and the key to funding his transition and achieving the independence he had always dreamed of. His entrepreneurial journey made him realize that business offers far more stability and growth potential than a traditional job—an idea that many people fail to consider.
