Join us on an inspiring journey as we discover the remarkable transformation of Dipanshu. What sparked this change? How did he go from struggling with personal hygiene to becoming a role model for others? Dive into his story to witness the challenges, the turning point, and the powerful impact of guidance and support. Writes Mr. Wasim Shaikh, CYDA.

Personal health and hygiene are fundamental to the well-being of individuals, particularly school children. Maintaining good hygiene not only prevents diseases but also builds confidence, self-discipline, and a positive learning environment. Poor hygiene can lead to frequent illnesses, absenteeism, and even social stigma, affecting a child’s overall development. Schools play a crucial role in instilling hygiene habits, making personal health and hygiene education essential for ensuring a child’s right to a clean and safe learning space.

Persistent Foundation and CYDA, in collaboration with Gurukul Aashramshala, Udasa, launched the “Healthy Environment for Private Schools of Nagpur” initiative. This project aims to educate students on life skills, water sanitation, and hygiene (WASH). Through this initiative, students are encouraged to adopt better hygiene practices, promoting a healthier lifestyle. Schools play a crucial role in inculcating hygiene habits and ensuring a child’s right to a clean and safe learning space.

One such remarkable success story is that of Dipanshu Wagh, a sixth-grade student at Gurukul Aashramshala, who transformed his personal hygiene habits and became a role model for others through targeted Child Cabinet sessions facilitated by CYDA’s intervention. Once known for his untidy appearance and poor hygiene, Dipanshu has now become an advocate for cleanliness among his peers.

Challenges: A Struggle with Hygiene

Dipanshu struggled with maintaining personal hygiene, which impacted his health, confidence, and social interactions. His habits often led to discomfort among his peers and concern among his teachers. However, they believed that with the right guidance and support, he could develop better hygiene practices and understand their importance.

Key Issues faced by Dipanshu:

  • Lack of regular bathing and personal hygiene
  • Wearing unwashed, dirty clothes
  • Messy, uncombed hair and improper grooming
  • Failing to wash hands after playing
  • Not trimming nails, leading to dirt build-up
  • Playing in the mud and not cleaning himself afterward
  • Developing minor skin infections due to poor hygiene
  • Low self-confidence and social interaction challenges

His condition was a reflection of a larger problem—a lack of awareness about personal hygiene and its impact on health. It was clear that without timely intervention, Dipanshu’s well-being, self-esteem, and academic performance would suffer.

Educating and Encouraging a Positive Shift

Recognizing Dipanshu’s challenges, the school’s student-led Health Committee, under the CYDA initiative,. They initiated a structured intervention to educate him on the importance of hygiene and to guide him through behavioural changes.

Steps Taken to Bring Change:

  1. Educational Workshop on Personal Hygiene: The Health Committee conducted a session for the entire sixth-grade class, explaining the importance of personal hygiene and its impact on health and well-being.
  2. One-on-One Counseling: Health Committee leaders, including the Prime Minister of the student body, Atul, and Health Minister, Krunal, personally counselled Dipanshu. They explained how simple hygiene habits could positively affect his health and confidence.
  3. Daily Hygiene Monitoring: The Health Minister took special care to ensure that Dipanshu followed the hygiene routine. He motivated him to bathe daily, wear clean clothes, and comb his hair properly.
  4. Continuous Follow-up and Encouragement: The Health Committee members consistently checked on Dipanshu, reinforcing positive behavior and appreciating his improvements.

Gradually, Dipanshu began to see the benefits of staying clean. He felt more confident, his skin infections reduced, and he was more accepted socially.

Guided Support: Ensuring Lasting Change

To ensure that Dipanshu followed through, the Child Cabinetmembers provided close monitoring and encouragement. Dipanshu’s transformation was evident to everyone. From being the student who avoided personal hygiene, he became a young advocate for cleanliness. Gradually, Dipanshu started taking responsibility for his hygiene and the committee members continued to support him with regular follow-ups.

Key Positive Changes After the Intervention:

  • Regular bathing and wearing clean clothes
  • Proper grooming habits, including combing hair and applying oil
  • Washing hands and feet after playing
  • Actively promoting hygiene awareness among younger students

Not only did Dipanshu adopt these habits, but he also became a guiding force for younger students. He started helping first and second-grade students understand the importance of hygiene. His transformation inspired many in the school to be more mindful of cleanliness.

A Role Model for Others

Today, Dipanshu is not just a student; he is a mentor for others in his school. Encouraged by his journey, the Health Committee involved him in training sessions where he educates younger students about hygiene.

  • Peer Learning Approach: Younger students feel more comfortable learning from an older peer, making hygiene awareness sessions more impactful.
  • Leading by Example: Seeing Dipanshu’s transformation motivates others to follow suit.
  • Sustainable Change: This initiative ensures that the awareness of personal hygiene continues to grow within the school community.

His transformation from an unhygienic child to a hygiene ambassador became a source of inspiration for the entire school.

A Clean Future Begins with Awareness

The story of Dipanshu is not just about one child’s transformation—it is about the potential for every child to lead a healthier, cleaner life with the right education and encouragement. Schools, teachers, and communities must continue to emphasize hygiene programs to ensure that every child grows up in a safe and hygienic environment. After all, a clean child is a healthy child, and a healthy child is a bright future in the making!

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Persistent Foundation for their unwavering support and commitment to creating healthy, safe, and nurturing environments for school children in Nagpur. Their dedication to empowering young minds and promoting better health and hygiene practices through various initiatives has made a remarkable impact on students’ lives.
