Empowering women to create their own businesses

Mahindra Accelo’s innovative initiative is transforming the lives of women by empowering them with the essential skills and knowledge needed to succeed in business. Through this impactful project, women are gaining the confidence and tools to take charge of their futures, leading to greater financial independence and self-reliance. Manisha Bhalerao, Program Officer at YouthAid Foundation, highlights the significant impact, this program has had on countless women, helping them break traditional barriers and embrace new opportunities.

A Struggle for Survival in Rural India

In the village of Shenit, Igatpuri, Harshada Govardhane, 36, lived with her husband, two children, and mother-in-law. Coming from a farming background, the family earned a income of Rs.8000/- per month through agricultural work in their own farm, a sum that barely met their basic needs. Despite completing her education up to the second year of a Bachelor of Arts degree, Harshada’s aspirations had always been overshadowed by family responsibilities. She dreamed of doing more, but with limited opportunities and no guidance, her ambitions seemed out of reach.

A Spark of Hope

Harshada’s life took a significant turn when Youth Aid Foundation &  Mahindra Accelo, organized a three-day business training workshop in her village. The program was designed specifically for women to help them become self-reliant and explore business opportunities. This training proved to be the turning point; Harshada had been waiting for. It not only gave her a deeper understanding of business concepts like marketing, financial literacy, government schemes, and savings, but also ignited her confidence to pursue her entrepreneurial dreams.

Identifying the Opportunity – A saree center in her village

One of the most valuable lessons Harshada learnt during the training was how to identify gaps in the local market. In her village, there was no store where women could easily buy sarees—an essential part of daily life and culture. Women had to travel to neighbouring villages or towns, spending extra time and money on travel. Realizing this unmet need, Harshada decided to open a saree center in Shenit, providing women with the convenience of shopping locally.

Overcoming Challenges – Harshada’s Determination

Starting a business in her village was not without its challenges. In a community where women were expected to stay within traditional roles, venturing into retail business was seen as unconventional. Harshada was worried about judgment and societal expectations. However, driven by a desire to improve her family’s financial situation and inspired by the training, she pushed past her fears and decided to take action.

With limited resources, Harshada started her saree business in a small part of her house. Youth Aid Foundation’s support came in the form of a Rs.10,000/- grant, in which Harshada purchased a rack, a few sarees, and set up a cash counter. Though the initial days were tough, Harshada’s perseverance paid off, and her business gradually began to grow.

The significant effect – Empowering other women

As Harshada’s saree center began to thrive, it had a profound impact on her community. Women who once thought entrepreneurship was out of their reach were inspired by Harshada’s success. They saw how she managed her household, family, and business, proving that women could indeed balance multiple roles and succeed. Harshada’s success story challenged traditional gender norms and served as an inspiration for other women, showing them that financial independence and entrepreneurship were possible.

Achievement

Today, Harshada is a successful entrepreneur, earning a steady income of Rs.15,000/- per month. Her saree center continues to grow and attract more customers, offering convenience to women who previously had to travel far for their shopping needs. The growth of her business has not only improved her family’s financial situation but also boosted her confidence. She is now identified as a dignified woman in her village, seen as a role model for other women.

Looking ahead, Harshada plans to expand her business further by setting up a larger saree center in the heart of the village, making it even more accessible to women. Her vision for the future is clear: to continue empowering herself, her family, and the women around her.The intervention of Youth Aid Foundation gave Harshada the tools and knowledge she needed to pursue her dreams. Along with technical skills, it provided her the confidence to break free from societal expectations and create a better life for herself.

A Message of Hope for the Youth

Harshada’s story is an inspiring one, especially for the youth, particularly young women, who might feel confined by their circumstances. It proves that with access to the right resources, guidance, and a little courage, anyone can transform their life. Harshada’s success is not just her own; it is a beacon of possibility for young women everywhere who might be unsure of their potential. Through hard work, determination, and the willingness to take risks, they, too, can create a future full of opportunities.
