Introduction

Mathematics became the barrier between me and good marks. Before joining CRC, I was sure that I was going to fail in mathematics,” recalls sixteen-year-old Arsalan Aqil Sheikh of Lakshmi Nagar, Yerwada. Surrounded by a lively joint family of eight members, Arsalan’s home—despite financial strains—had a strong sense of togetherness. His mother worked diligently at a local cloth brand, while his father toiled as a welder in a nearby shop. Though neither had the opportunity for extensive schooling, they firmly believed in the transformative power of education and instilled this conviction their child. Their encouragement and values became the foundation for his academic pursuits and aspirations, despite the challenges they all faced.

Struggling with Mathematics

Arsalan had always excelled in science and harboured a deep passion for sketching. However, Mathematics became a significant challenge for him in grade X, especially after scoring 39% in grade IX. He struggled to grasp the complex concepts presented by his teacher, which led to a growing sense of frustration. As his difficulties mounted, his confidence began to erode. The fear of failure slowly intensified, overshadowing his academic aspirations and threatening his once-strong belief in his own abilities.

Seeking Support

Concerned about their son’s distress, his mother and elder sister thought, should join CYDA’s CRC in Salve Nagar, believing it could provide the support he desperately needed. In September 2023, he took their advice and joined the center, drawn by its promise of a caring and enjoyable learning environment. Arsalan’s life began to transform. Beyond academic assistance, he found a mentor who understood his struggles with mathematics. Through simplified strategies and patient guidance, he rebuilds his confidence and reframes mistakes as valuable learning opportunities.

Challenges and a holistic approach to learning

The initial hurdles were not merely academic. Adapting to new study techniques and incorporating consistent practice took time and perseverance. However, the support and encouragement of his mentors and peers created an environment where he could thrive. Mathematics and science gradually became less intimidating as Arsalan applied techniques learned from his mentor. Additionally, CRC’s holistic approach allowed him to develop essential computer skills and nurture his passion for sketching. This comprehensive support reshaped his perspective on education. No longer just a requirement, education became a source of inspiration.

The center fostered not just academic excellence but also a genuine love for learning, filling him with curiosity and eagerness to explore new ideas.

A pivotal achievement

Armed with unwavering support, Arsalan approached his grade X exams with renewed determination. His meticulous preparation and the encouragement of his mentors paid off, resulting in a surprising 63% on his results—a victory far beyond mere numbers. This achievement marked a pivotal moment in his journey toward a brighter future.

With newfound confidence, Arsalan chose to pursue commerce, driven by a keen interest in business and finance. His aspirations extend to graphic design, where he envisions combining his artistic talents with his educational pursuits. He dreams of creating impactful designs that reflect his creativity while paving the way for a fulfilling career.

Arsalan’s journey underscores the profound impact of personalized mentorship and supportive educational environments. His story highlights how addressing academic challenges holistically—integrating emotional, social, and skill-based learning—can transform a student’s relationship with education. By overcoming his struggles in mathematics, Arsalan developed resilience, critical thinking, and a broader perspective on learning. Limited access to resources, overburdened school systems, and financial constraints often hinder academic performance. These obstacles emphasize the need for initiatives like CRC, which bridge gaps and empower students to reach their potential. As he continues on his educational path, he carries with him the lessons of perseverance and self-belief, ready to face whatever challenges lie ahead.
