A Journey from Struggles to Entrepreneurial Success

Sony’s (name changed) life is a powerful story of transformation—from personal hardship and societal rejection to financial independence and community leadership. Her journey was made possible by the unwavering support of United Way Hyderabad and the dedicated efforts of Mr Pritesh Kamble, Head of the Inclusion Unit at the Centre for Youth Development and Activities (CYDA). Their inclusive programs have shown how meaningful support can empower individuals from marginalized communities to lead dignified, self-sufficient lives.

At 37, Sony, a bisexual woman from Vaidwadi, Pune, has not only overcome deep personal and financial struggles but has also built a thriving business with CYDA’s support. Her story stands as a source of inspiration, demonstrating the impact of courage, determination, and the transformative power of education and community support.

Early Struggles and Personal Loss

Sony’s early life was filled with hardship. When she was in 8th standard, tragedy struck-her older sister passed away, leaving behind three young children. Despite being a teenager, Sony stepped up to raise her mother and herself. But the tragedy didn’t end there.

Sony’s married life was filled with challenges and eventually ended in separation. When she returned to her family home, things took a turn for the worse. Her relatives rejected her after her niece and nephews discovered her bisexuality. With no support from her family, she was forced to leave. She found refuge in her friends and the larger community. It was a painful and isolating time, but it also made her stronger and more determined to create a life on her terms.

Hardships and Survival

To make ends meet, Sony took up a job that required her to work through the night. The work exposed her to harsh conditions and long, exhausting hours. Though it helped her financially, it was not sustainable. The difficult conditions pushed her to seek a better future.

In the midst of these struggles, Sony did not give up on her education. She completed her nursing assistant’s degree while juggling various jobs over the next 8-10 years. Despite her hard work, she realized she was being exploited-earning low wages with no savings or financial stability. This experience sparked a desire for change. She wanted financial independence and a life free from constant hardship. That desire led  her to dream of starting her own business.

A Pivotal Moment

Sony’s journey toward entrepreneurship began when she heard about CYDA’s business training program through a colleague. This became the turning point in her life. She learned that the organization offered business training and resources specifically designed to support individuals from marginalized communities.

She credits the program with giving her the confidence and knowledge to take her first step toward entrepreneurship. Through the training, she learned crucial skills such as how to start and manage a business, maintain financial records, and adopt saving strategies. The program also offered emotional support by connecting her with others facing similar challenges.

Securing Financial Support and Launching the Business

With a grant of Rs. 10,000 from CYDA and a loan of Rs. 20,000 from a local self-help group, Sony was able to start her grocery shop, which she fondly calls her “Tapri” (petty shop). Initially, she struggled with managing business operations, but CYDA’s continuous guidance helped her overcome those hurdles.

She used the funds to stock essential items such as biscuits, shampoo, snacks, and household staples to serve the local community. She gradually adapted to managing inventory, dealing with customers, and maintaining accounts.

Her determination, along with the skills she gained from the training, led to remarkable progress. In a short time, her business gained momentum, and her monthly income doubled-from Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 20,000. The increased earnings gave her financial stability and the confidence to plan for her future. She even started a Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) policy in her name, reinforcing her commitment to long-term financial independence.

Empowerment and Inspiration

Today, Sony is an inspiration in her community. She runs her shop  independently and efficiently, offering essential goods to the people of Vaidwadi. Her success is not just about financial gain-it reflects self-reliance, dignity, and empowerment.

She is also committed to giving back. Sony works closely with NGOs in Pune, using her experience to support others who may be facing similar challenges. Her message to the LGBTQIA+ community is clear: believe in yourself, no matter what challenges may come your way. She encourages everyone-regardless of background or identity-to pursue their dreams, take risks, and never give up.

Looking ahead, Sony hopes to expand her business and continue using her journey to inspire others. She believes that organizations like CYDA are crucial in building a world where people from marginalized communities have the opportunity to thrive.
