Join us as we explore the inspiring journey of Gopal, a passionate makeup artist and discover how he transformed his struggles into a successful business filled with purpose and pride.

Early beginnings and passion for makeup

Gopal’s makeup artistry began with a strong passion for beauty and self-expression. Realizing his interest in this creative field, he decided to enroll in a professional makeup course, which laid a strong foundation for his future. Following his course, he took the first step into the professional world as a freelance makeup artist. For two years, he worked tirelessly, taking on any opportunity he could to gain experience and improve his craft. While freelancing allowed him to explore the industry and understand client needs, it came with its own set of challenges—among them being financial instability and an inconsistent flow of bookings.

Turning passion into a Business

With a strong desire to build something of his own, Gopal decided to establish his makeup business. However, like many budding entrepreneurs, he faced initial hurdles. “I was only getting 5-6 orders per month,” Gopal recalls. This low volume of work meant his earnings were not enough to sustain the business or invest in better tools and products.

Despite these struggles, Gopal did not give up. He continued working hard, delivering high-quality services and slowly building a loyal trade. Word-of-mouth referrals began to increase and people started to notice the precision, creativity, and professionalism in his work. Over time, his client base grew, and bookings started coming in more frequently.

Support from CYDA: A Turning Point

A significant milestone in Gopal’s journey came when he learnt about the Centre for Youth Development and Activities through a friend. He decided to participate in their business training program, a decision he now considers pivotal to his success. This training equipped him with essential techniques, knowledge of products, and the confidence needed to work with clients. “The training I received from CYDA taught me how to manage budget properly and handle business income and expenditure smartly,” says Gopal. These sessions helped him understand the financial side of running a business, which he had previously struggled with. By applying these concepts, he was able to organize his operations more efficiently and plan for future growth.

Recognizing his potential and determination, CYDA also provided financial support of Rs.10K for his business expansion. Gopal used this opportunity to invest in branded, high-quality makeup products—a move that immediately enhanced the quality of his work. With improved tools and products, his services stood out even more, leading to higher client satisfaction and positive word-of-mouth.

From struggles to success

Today, Gopal’s journey has taken a complete turn. What once started with a handful of monthly bookings has transformed into a fully booked schedule, especially in recent days. His growing reputation in the industry, combined with his exceptional work and customer service has made him a trusted name in his locality.

“Some days are so packed, I barely get time to rest,” Gopal says with a smile. But for him, the busy schedule is not a burden—it is a badge of honour, a reminder of how far he has come.

Pride and Representation

As an openly bisexual man, Gopal also acknowledges the importance of representation and visibility in his field. In an industry often driven by traditional norms, his success stands as a powerful statement of authenticity and inclusivity. His openness about his identity has not only helped him connect with a diverse range of clients but also inspired others in the LGBTQIA+ community to pursue their passions boldly.

Looking Ahead

Gopal continues to grow his business with enthusiasm and a vision for the future. He aims to mentor other aspiring makeup artists, especially those from marginalized communities and possibly have his own studio someday. He remains deeply thankful to CYDA for the knowledge, mentorship and financial support that helped him build a sustainable business. “CYDA empowered me to make smarter decisions and believe in my abilities,” he says.
