Unstoppable Kajal: How Entrepreneurship Changed Her Destiny”

Kajal Waghari’s journey is a powerful story of resilience and transformation. For over a year, she faced severe hardship after her drug-addicted husband abandoned her and their three children following frequent, ugly altercations. Left with no means of support, Kajal initially began babysitting children from her slum, taking care of 12 kids daily for a fee. However, the lockdown brought her work to a halt, plunging her into deeper despair.

During this time, Kajal was forced to beg on the streets to feed her family. For over a year and a half, even managing to buy ₹10 worth of dal was a struggle. Her children, despite their tender age, would sometimes suggest returning to begging when resources were scarce. “I did not have the luxury of giving up. The thought of my children kept me going,” Kajal shared.

Her struggles took a toll on her mental health, with depression, sleepless nights, and constant crying becoming a part of her daily life. Yet, Kajal grabbed every opportunity she could find to earn a living. She took up washing dishes at marriage halls, where she endured disrespect and unsafe situations. Men would often look at her inappropriately, making her feel vulnerable.

Amid these challenges, the YouthAid Foundation (YAF) and RPG Foundation became a beacon of hope. With their support, Kajal began her journey as an entrepreneur. They suggested she start a small business, and with her first effort, she earned ₹1,300. Initially, interacting with customers was intimidating for her, but the training she received began to guide her responses and interactions. While she admits she is still learning, her confidence has grown significantly.

Kajal’s business involves trading and selling items like TV covers, mixer covers, fridge covers, table mats, cushion covers, bedsheets, and other home décor products. She visits door-to-door to sell products and doing business from her home. Additionally, Kajal is skilled in creating dolls from raw materials and hopes to expand her business into doll-making. Her ambition to explore new opportunities highlights her determination to improve her circumstances.

With the guidance of YAF mentors, Kajal learned to use mobile banking and QR codes to receive payments, opening her first bank account. This marked a significant milestone in her financial independence. She presented her business to corporate representatives during an event hosted by the RPG Foundation. It was her first experience in a corporate setting, where she confidently shared her journey and business aspirations. This experience boosted her confidence and presentation skills.

Kajal’s proactive nature is her greatest strength. She grabs every opportunity that comes her way, determined to break free from the cycle of poverty. With continued support, mentoring, and opportunities, Kajal is on the path to building a sustainable business and securing a brighter future for herself and her children. Her story is an inspiring example of how resilience, hard work, and the right support can transform lives against all odds.
