In many parts of India, women face countless challenges when life takes an unexpected turn. Yet, some stories remind us that with the proper guidance and opportunity, even the toughest battles can become new beginnings. One such inspiring story is that of Surekha Shinde from Ahilyanagar.

Surekha, 38, lives with her two children. She had studied up to grade 10 and was living a simple family life until the COVID-19 pandemic changed everything. The sudden loss of her husband left her as the sole caregiver and breadwinner for her family. With no stable income, it became difficult to manage daily expenses and her children’s education. Her limited education made it nearly impossible to find a suitable job, and soon, financial stress and self-doubt began to erode her confidence. Despite her determination to stand on her own feet, Surekha lacked the right skills and guidance. She wanted to work, but didn’t know where to start or how to begin. That’s when her life took a new turn.

Through community outreach, Surekha came to know about the YouthAid Foundation’s Skills Training Centre in Ahilyanagar. The center offers various soft skills and job-oriented courses designed to help individuals like her find meaningful employment. With the support and counselling, Surekha chose to enrol in the Petrol Pump Assistant Course, a profession rarely selected by women in her area.

During the five-day training, Surekha learned how to read petrol pump meters, handle cash transactions, operate digital scanners, and maintain daily records. The trainers provided individual attention, patiently helping her overcome her fears and gain practical knowledge. Along with technical skills, she was also taught communication, time management, teamwork, and customer service – essential qualities for any workplace. Gradually, her confidence grew. She started believing in her ability to handle a job and take charge of her life.

After completing her training, Surekha was offered a job at a local petrol pump, earning a monthly income of Rs 13,000. This new opportunity not only helped her manage household expenses but also allowed her to save for her son’s education. More importantly, it gave her back her confidence, dignity, and hope for a better future. Reflecting on her journey, Surekha shared, “I used to think my life would always be full of struggles. But the team trained me and helped me get a job. Now I can dream of a better future for my children and meet my financial needs.” Her journey proves that when women are given the chance to learn and work, they rebuild their confidence and dignity.
