Youth Empowerment: Bhumika’s Mission to Give Back

By Kaustubh Bhamare, Y4C, Coordinator

In the heart of Lakshmi Nagar, Yerwada, lives a 17-year-old girl whose life embodies hope, determination, and an unwavering desire to transform her community. Bhumika Mhetre, born into a modest family, faced challenges daily, but she always believed in the possibility of a brighter future. Her father works as a ward boy, and her mother manages the household chores. Her elder sister and younger brother support the family by working in a private firm. Despite their hard work, the family’s resources were limited, but Bhumika’s ambitions far surpassed the confines of her surroundings.

Bhumika’s journey of transformation began when she found herself at the doorstep of CYDA’s Youth Resource Center (YRC) in 2021. What began as an opportunity to engage in different activities soon blossomed into something far greater—an awakening to the power of youth-driven change and community service.

Dreams and Challenges

Bhumika’s life, like that of many youths in underprivileged areas, was shaped by the realities of poverty. While her parents worked hard to provide for the family, Bhumika often faced the uncertainty that comes with limited resources. She was eager to learn, grow and break free from the cycle of financial struggles but lacked the direction to channel her energy productively.

As a young girl, Bhumika’s aspirations were immense, but a gap existed between her dreams and the means to realise them. Many youths in similar circumstances face not only financial limitations but also a lack of guidance, mentorship, and exposure to opportunities. These are often compounded by societal pressures and stereotypes, which can limit their potential scope. For Bhumika, these barriers could have crushed her dreams, but she was determined to find a way forward.

Challenges: Finding the Right Path

Growing up in a family that was dependent on modest earnings, her aspirations often clashed with the harsh realities of life. While her family loved and supported her, they lacked the resources to help her explore her passions or guide her towards a fulfilling future. Like many other youths from disadvantaged backgrounds, Bhumika had to grapple with the pressure to contribute financially to her family, which sometimes left her feeling torn between her dreams and reality. The social constraints faced by youth in similar circumstances can be overwhelming. Expectations from families and communities can create a narrow view of success, often leading to self-doubt and frustration. However, Bhumika’s defining characteristic was her resilience. She refused to allow these challenges to define her.

Opportunities for Growth

In 2021, Bhumika found herself at a crossroads. At that time, she came across an opportunity at CYDA’s YRC. The center offered a unique platform that supported youth in overcoming their challenges by providing access to education, mentorship and skill development activities. Bhumika’s involvement at YRC opened a new chapter in her life, one that would allow her to channel her boundless energy towards personal growth and community service.

At YRC, Bhumika became involved in various activities such as dancing, martial arts and sports. These programs were not only fun but also equipped her with skills in self-discipline, teamwork, and leadership. Through the center, she was able to express herself creatively and physically, which empowered her to believe in her abilities and strengths. It was here that Bhumika experienced firsthand how empowerment and self-belief could reshape her life.

Impact: From Empowerment to Leadership

Bhumika’s experience at CYDA proved to be a turning point, catalyzing a profound desire to give back to the community that had nurtured her. The programs at YRC did not just focus on activities; they also cultivated a sense of purpose. Inspired by the support and encouragement she received, she joined Awaaz Hamari, a platform dedicated to community change-makers.

At Awaaz Hamari, her transformation from participant to leader was marked by several milestones. She began by teaching young learners how to code using Scratch programming, a skill she had acquired through YRC’s workshops. This was her first step towards using her skills for the betterment of others. She also organized events like Diwali celebrations, where the youth came together to celebrate culture and unity, and led paper bag-making initiatives to reduce plastic use in the community.

Her leadership did not stop at workshops or events. Bhumika participated in clean-up drives and community awareness campaigns, demonstrating how collective efforts can lead to tangible changes. Her ability to transition from a learner to a leader at such a young age showcased the transformative impact of the programs offered at CYDA. The center not only gave her a platform to enhance her skills but also instilled in her the belief that she could make a real difference.

Leadership: Transforming the Self, Transforming the Community

Becoming a leader at Awaaz Hamari gave Bhumika a deeper understanding of how collective action could create lasting change. As she took on more responsibilities, she learnt the importance of collaboration, empathy, and dedication. Her personal growth mirrored the growth of her community, and she found strength in knowing that true change is not about individual dreams but about coming together and working towards a shared vision.

Bhumika’s story highlights how youth, when provided with the right opportunities, can rise above their circumstances and become agents of change. Through the guidance and resources at YRC, Bhumika not only changed her own life but also became a beacon of hope and inspiration for others in her community.

The Bigger Picture: Impacting the Community

The ripple effect of Bhumika’s journey extends far beyond her personal accomplishments. By empowering herself, she has also empowered others around her. As one of the youngest members of Awaaz Hamari, Bhumika has demonstrated the power of youth-led initiatives to create real, sustainable change. She is proof that young people, regardless of their backgrounds, can shape their own futures and make meaningful contributions to their communities.

Her story continues to inspire many, reminding everyone that challenges are not roadblocks but stepping stones on the growth path. The true power of youth empowerment lies not in escaping one’s circumstances, but in facing them head-on and working toward collective solutions. For Bhumika, the journey is just beginning, and the future holds endless possibilities for both her and the community she serves.
