The transformation of Munja Gore from a skilled laborer to a WASH champion is a powerful reflection of the impact of youth empowerment and skill-building. This journey was made possible through the unwavering support of UNICEF, whose partnership in the WASH Mitra initiative has been instrumental in developing grassroots change. Amol Shewale, Program Manager – Western region WASH unit head at CYDA, writes about how CYDA has played a pivotal role in guiding and supporting youth like Munja, enabling them to lead with purpose and resilience.

In the heart of Selu, Maharashtra, Munja Gore’s journey is a testimony to the power of determination and youth-driven transformation. From working as a skilled labourer to becoming a driving force in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH), his story proves that passion and determination can reshape communities. Born and raised in a modest household, Munja always dreamt of a life beyond conventional employment. After completing his education at the Industrial Training Institute (ITI), he started as a masonry helper, contributing to local construction projects. Yet, deep down, he yearned to create a meaningful and lasting impact within his community.
The Defining Moment: WASH MITRA Training
Munja’s turning point came when he discovered an advertisement for the WASH MITRA training program—a transformative initiative supported by UNICEF and CYDA. This program provided free multi-skilled training in plumbing, electrical work, and infrastructure maintenance, with a special focus on school sanitation systems. More than just technical skills, the training instilled leadership qualities, empowering participants to advocate for better hygiene and sanitation in their communities.
Eager to be part of something bigger, Munja enrolled without hesitation. The hands-on approach of the program exposed him to real-world challenges and solutions, allowing him to gain expertise in water management, sustainable sanitation, and hygiene promotion. Field visits to schools helped him identify infrastructure gaps and implement practical solutions under expert guidance. By December 2022, he had completed his training—equipped not just with new skills, but with a mission: to improve sanitation facilities in local schools and develop a culture of hygiene awareness.
Overcoming Challenges: A Journey of Resilience
Munja’s initial days as a WASH MITRA were filled with several challenges. Many schools in his region suffered with poor sanitation, outdated plumbing, and a severe lack of resources for maintenance. Convincing school authorities and local stakeholders to prioritize WASH improvements proved difficult, as budget limitations and bureaucratic hurdles frequently delayed progress. Recognizing the importance of community involvement, he actively engaged local residents, urging them to invest in sustainable sanitation solutions. He reached out to village leaders, NGOs, and businesses for sponsorships and donations, gradually building a network of supporters. With the unwavering dedication, he initiated small yet meaningful changes—repairing leaking pipes, restoring broken handwashing stations, and implementing waste management systems in schools.
As word of his efforts spread, more schools began to acknowledge the significance of his work. Authorities grew more receptive to his initiatives, allowing him to scale up interventions. Munja’s relentless advocacy not only improved hygiene standards but also instilled a sense of accountability within schools and communities.
Transforming Lives Through WASH Interventions

Munja’s initiatives led to significant improvements across multiple schools. By repairing leakages, ensuring proper drainage, and installing handwashing stations, he directly contributed to healthier learning environments. Students experienced fewer waterborne illnesses, leading to better attendance and improved academic performance. Teachers and staff also became more proactive in maintaining hygiene, fostering a culture of cleanliness that benefited the entire school community.
Moreover, Munja’s efforts had a profound economic impact. His income doubled post-training, providing him with the financial stability to support his family while continuing his mission. His work not only uplifted his household but also created employment opportunities for others who were inspired to follow in his footsteps. His success story ignited a wave of enthusiasm among young individuals in the village, encouraging them to explore skill-based training and engage in community service. This movement fostered a culture of proactive involvement, where youth began recognizing their potential to drive meaningful change.
Inspiring Future Generations
Today, Munja stands as an inspiration of change in his village. His journey highlights how skill development and determination can empower youth to lead meaningful transformations. His work not only improved school infrastructure but also instilled a sense of ownership within the community, ensuring sustainable maintenance of WASH facilities. The impact of youth initiatives proves that, with the right skills, support, and perseverance, young individuals can drive sustainable change in their communities.
