A journey of Empowerment and Triumph

Actively supporting grassroots initiatives in Nanded, Intel has made a meaningful impact in uplifting marginalized communities, particularly those within the LGBTQIA+ spectrum. A driving force behind this progress is Pritesh Kamble, Director of the Rainbow Roots Foundation, whose steadfast dedication and leadership have empowered countless individuals. His work has developed a culture of inclusion, respect and visibility, paving the way for broader societal acceptance and recognition.

Facing rejection for his identity

In a society where only two genders — male and female — are widely accepted, those who identify differently often face isolation and discrimination. Tukaram Madhav Davare, a proud member of the MSM (Men Sex with men) from LGBTIQA+ community from Bhokar, Maharashtra, has lived through these challenges but chose to rise above them with determination, courage, and dignity.

Tukaram’s early career began in the hospitality industry as a cook in a local hotel. However, due to his gender identity, he faced constant harassment and mistreatment from colleagues and even some customers. The emotional toll of discrimination made it impossible for him to continue working there. Rather than letting the discrimination defeat him, Tukaram took a bold step — he decided to take control of his future by starting his own hotel business.

Opening his hotel was not easy for Tukaram. Being a member of the LGBTIQA+ community in a conservative rural setting meant he was already viewed with suspicion and judgment. Many villagers were hesitant to visit his establishment—not because of the quality of food or service, but because of deep-rooted social stigma. Some feared what others might say if they were seen supporting his business, while others simply could not accept the idea of someone from the LGBTQIA+ community running a respectable enterprise in their neighborhood.

There were moments when Tukaram felt the weight of social judgment. However, he also experienced kindness from travellers’ and visitors from outside the village who supported his business. Their trust became his motivation, pushing him to work harder and believe in his dream.

A Turning point

A significant turning point came when his friend Gajanan from Nanded introduced him to CYDA. Thereafter, Tukaram received valuable business training that equipped him with skills in management, customer service, and financial planning — knowledge he had never received before. More importantly, CYDA offered him a financial grant of Rs.10,000/-. This was the first time he had ever received such direct financial help. Tukaram wisely invested the grant into his hotel business, expanding his menu and upgrading his services.

In the early days, his monthly income ranged between Rs.35,000/- and Rs.40,000/-. Thanks to the support from CYDA, Tukaram was able to improve his hotel business and his monthly income quickly rose to over Rs.50,000/-. But this success was about more than just money — it was about finding his voice, standing tall with pride, and proving that even in a society that often excludes people like him, he could build a life of dignity, strength, and purpose.

Struggles turned into Strength

Tukaram believes that success requires strong willpower, but organizations like CYDA play a crucial role in making the journey smoother. Their support transformed his life and helped him become a role model for others in the LGBTIQA+ community.

“Just saying ‘thank you’ to CYDA is not enough,” Tukaram says. “I will always remain grateful to them for standing by me when few others did.”

Tukaram’s journey reminds us that real change happens when marginalized voices are heard, supported, and empowered. His success story sends a powerful message: with determination, the right opportunities, and a little support, anyone — regardless of their identity — can achieve their dreams.

Today, Tukaram continues to run his hotel successfully, inspiring others from the LGBTIQA+ community to believe in themselves and pursue their aspirations with pride and confidence.
