STEM Mela in Pune ignited scientific curiosity in 750 government school students from 5th to 7th grades. The event, supported by United Way Delhi and EMpower, showcased creativity, innovation, and critical thinking, empowering students to pursue STEM education and develop essential skills for the 21st century.
The students from government schools of Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation are dreaming towards their future in the STEM domain. They are realizing that STEM education is a crucial tool in the 21st century, making them scientifically literate, helping them keep up with changing information and technology, and preparing them to respond to educational and business challenges with high-level cognitive skills.
In the spirit of igniting young minds and fostering scientific curiosity, the Centre for Youth Development and Activities (CYDA) organized a dynamic STEM Mela at Bhosari, Pune, capturing the enthusiasm of 750 students from 5th to 7th grades and 23 dedicated teachers. The event, supported by United Way Delhi and EMpower in the PCMC area, was not just an exhibition — it was a celebration of creativity, innovation, and critical thinking.
The STEM Mela was strategically planned to mark the Science Day, aligning with CYDA’s broader mission of promoting Equitable and Gender-Responsive Education in STEM. Students from government schools of Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) showcased 98 innovative models spanning across Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Guided by their teachers and CYDA facilitators, these young innovators brought their concepts to life — from basic scientific principles to advanced technological ideas. The exhibition featured an impressive range of models, including Rainwater Harvesting, Solar City, Robots and Microscopes, Holograms, Plastic Recycling Systems, Earthquake Alarms, and Global Warming Solutions. Each project was presented with remarkable confidence and clarity, demonstrating not only the students’ grasp of STEM concepts but also their growing ability to think critically and communicate effectively.
The impact of CYDA’s STEM program resonated deeply through the words of the special guests who graced the event. Mrs. Sunita Gite, Supervisor of the Education Department, PCMC, emphasized the significance of STEM education in preparing students for the 21st century. She praised the students for their creativity, problem-solving skills, and teamwork, stating, “STEM education equips our students with the cognitive skills needed to navigate an ever-evolving world. Today’s exhibition is a testament to their innovation and hard work.”
Ms. Sujaata Jadhav, Indian Statistical Officer and UPSC Maharashtra Rank 1 holder, inspired the students by sharing her journey of cracking the UPSC exam. She encouraged the girls in particular, reinforcing the message that “Dreams in STEM are within reach with consistency, hard work, and self-belief.” Her words resonated strongly, motivating students to pursue scholarships and mentorship programs that can guide them on their STEM paths.
Mrs. Sonia Garcha, Core Committee Member of CSpathshala and a passionate educationist, highlighted the importance of familiarizing students with STEM terminologies and developing interdisciplinary thinking. She urged students to embrace opportunities like the Bebras Challenge to sharpen their computational and logical thinking, saying, “Every project here is a stepping stone towards critical thinking and innovation.”
One of the most impactful moments of the event was the announcement of the inter-school competition winners. It was a proud and empowering moment as all the winners were girls, breaking stereotypes and reinforcing the message of gender inclusivity in STEM. The first prize went to Rimjim Rajesh Yadav for her Eco Energy Farm project, while Gauri Virnath Kadwade secured the second prize for her Rainwater Harvesting project. The third prize was awarded to Shalu Manoj Gond for her Solar City model.
The success of the STEM Mela highlighted the tangible impact of CYDA’s STEM program. By fostering a hands-on, inquiry-based approach to learning. All participating students received certificates acknowledging their dedication and effort, reinforcing their sense of accomplishment and inspiring them to aim higher.
The STEM Mela was not just an event — it was a powerful movement toward building a future where every child, regardless of gender or background, is equipped to innovate, solve, and lead. Through CYDA’s unwavering support and the collaboration with United Way Delhi and EMpower, these young minds are now better prepared to embrace the limitless possibilities of STEM education.
