Success often starts with small steps, and for Aman Sharma, those steps led him to an incredible achievement. Aman, a shy and reserved student, would rarely engage in classroom activities or ask questions. However, in the academic year 2024-25, he emerged as the First in School in the prestigious International Bebras Challenge, proving that with the right guidance and opportunities, every student has the potential to shine.
Aman Sharma, a 5th-grade student at PCMC’s English Medium School, comes from a humble background. His parents, Mr. Sonu Sharma and Mrs. Suman Sharma, have always aspired for their son to become an independent and confident individual. Living with his two sisters in Shantinagar, Mauli Complex, Bhosari, Pune financial constraints led his parents to enroll him in a PCMC school, where he could receive free education.
For the past three years, CYDA has been implementing its STEM Education Project in his school, focusing on grades 5 to 7. The initiative aims to promote interest in STEM while building students’ confidence in these subjects.
Overcoming Challenges Through STEM Education
At the beginning of Grade 5, Aman found mathematics particularly challenging. He often felt anxious and struggled with concepts. However, CYDA’s STEM project played a crucial role in transforming his perspective. Aman shared, “STEM hands on activities strengthened my foundation and helped me understand concepts better. Now, mathematics is my favourite subject!”
NEP 2020 emphasizes computational thinking from Grade 6. CYDA’s STEM project starts in Grade 5, building analytical skills through problem-solving, and critical thinking. A key initiative includes guiding students for the Bebras Challenge, fostering future-ready computational abilities.
Participation in the Bebras Challenge
The Bebras Challenge is an international competition designed to inspire students to explore their talents in computational thinking. Organized by CSpathshala, this challenge is conducted in over 30 countries and encourages students worldwide to engage with computing concepts. Participants are given 45 minutes to answer 15 multiple-choice questions that assess computational and logical reasoning skills. The competition is conducted online in schools, making it accessible to students from diverse backgrounds.
Recognizing Aman’s potential, CYDA’s STEM trainers motivated him to participate. Aman recalls, “CYDA Didi registered me for the Bebras Challenge. At first, I was afraid to take the exam, but she guided me and helped me overcome my fear. Initially, it was a completely new concept for me, but I truly enjoyed the challenge.”
A Proud Moment for Aman and His Family
When Aman’s parents known that he had secured First in School achievement in this prestigious international competition, their joy knew no bounds. His father, Mr. Sonu Sharma, expressed his pride and gratitude: “Despite the struggles we have faced, this achievement proves his potential. This competition has increased his confidence and helped me understand his strengths and interests. Thank you for providing this platform to Aman.”
A Teacher’s Perspective
Aman’s transformation did not go unnoticed by his teachers. Mrs. Sangita Kahane, his class teacher, shared her observations: “We have noticed a positive change in Aman. He has become more attentive in class, actively participates in discussions, and has even started developing leadership skills, such as collaboration and teamwork.”
Aman’s Future Aspirations
With newfound confidence and a strong foundation in STEM, Aman has set his sights on a bright future. He dreams of joining the Indian Army and serving the nation. His journey showcases how early exposure to computational thinking, problem-solving, and logical reasoning can shape a student’s ambitions and capabilities.
Conclusion
Aman’s achievement is not an isolated success. In the 2024-25 Bebras Challenge, 124 students from PCMC schools participated under CYDA’s guidance. The results have been incredibly encouraging: Two students from the Brahmagupta Group ranked First in School, scoring above 100 marks. Five students scored above 90 marks and secured First Runner-up positions.
Aman’s story is a testament to the power of inclusive education, mentorship, and experiential learning. His journey from a shy student to a Bebras Challenge winner highlights the impact of STEM education in fostering curiosity, confidence, and academic excellence. With continued support, many more students like Aman can discover their true potential and achieve remarkable success.
