To develop healthier and more sustainable learning environments, CYDA launched the initiative “Healthy Environment in a Schools” in collaboration with Persistent Foundation. This project focuses on equipping students with essential life skills, water sanitation awareness, and health education. The initiative has empowered students by providing them with valuable knowledge, enabling them to make informed choices. As a result, they have adopted improved hygiene practices, actively contributing to better water sanitation and cleanliness within the school.
The Impact of Disruptive Behavior on Academic and Social Relationships
Gaurav was widely known as a troublemaker in school. His mischievous behavior disrupted the class, and he often made fun of the teachers, which led to him being labeled as a “bad student.” His aggressive nature isolated him from peers and teachers, as any criticism or disrespect triggered angry outbursts, creating a tense classroom atmosphere. Gaurav also engaged in pranks with his friends, which only added to the distraction and made it difficult for anyone to focus on his studies. This behavior caused a barrier between him and others, leading to isolation and strained relationships. As a result, Gaurav’s lack of focus on his studies became evident, and despite the teachers’ attempts to engage him, his troubled relationships and disobedient behavior overshadowed his academic progress.
Intervention: A Turning Point in Gaurav’s Life
The CYDA intervention, through the TARANG Plus WASH Training, aimed to empower students in classes 8 and 9 with essential life skills and knowledge on water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH). This 10-day training provided scientific insights into the physical, mental, and emotional changes adolescents experience, helping them navigate this crucial phase in a healthy and informed manner. By integrating discussions on reproductive health, gender, and hygiene, the program fostered awareness and encouraged positive behavioral changes among students.
After the training, the CYDA team took the opportunity to personally counsel Gaurav, building a rapport with him and explaining the natural changes of adolescence. They helped him understand that anger and impulsive behavior were common at this age but encouraged him to channel these feelings positively to avoid hindering his progress.
To further guide Gaurav in a positive direction, he was appointed as the Prime Minister of the newly formed Child Cabinet, created as part of the project to promote cleanliness and hygiene. This strategic move aimed to engage Gaurav and give him a sense of responsibility and purpose. His classmates were encouraged to support him in this role, and they agreed enthusiastically. Gaurav, feeling valued and trusted, began to see himself differently. His self-esteem was boosted, and with this newfound responsibility, his behavior started to improve significantly.
Transformation Through Leadership and Responsibility
As Gaurav embraced his leadership role in the committee, he received praise and encouragement from both his peers and teachers. This recognition motivated him to take his duties seriously and perform them with dedication. The support from his classmates and the positive environment of the Child Cabinet, where he felt appreciated, helped him develop healthier, more constructive relationships with others.
Gaurav became actively involved in maintaining cleanliness, ensuring proper hygiene practices like washing hands, and even conducting health training sessions for his fellow students. His engagement in these activities demonstrated his commitment to both personal growth and the well-being of his school community.
Impact: A Role Model for Change
The Child Cabinet at Saraswati Shishu Mandir School is now a shining example of student leadership. The committee members, including Gaurav, take full responsibility for maintaining cleanliness and hygiene, ensuring that all students wash their hands before meals, and conducting health-related training sessions for younger students.

Today, Gaurav is regarded by his teachers as a calm and respectful student, admired for his discipline and dedication. He learned to manage his anger, communicate respectfully, and embrace responsibility. As the leader of the Child Cabinet, he has not only transformed himself but also inspired his peers, proving that with the right guidance and opportunities, every student has the potential to grow into a responsible leader.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Persistent Foundation for their invaluable support in making the TARANG Plus WASH Training a success. Their commitment to empowering adolescents through education on water, sanitation, hygiene, reproductive health, and gender awareness has been instrumental in shaping a healthier and more informed generation. We sincerely appreciate their partnership and dedication to creating a lasting impact in the lives of young students.
