A Transgender Fashion Designer’s Journey

Bhuvneshwar Divekar’s transformation from a bullied individual to a thriving entrepreneur showcases resilience and the life-changing impact of CYDA’s support.

Growing up in a middle-class family, Bhuvneshwar Divekar often felt like an outsider in his own world. As a transgender individual, he faced relentless bullying for his feminine mannerisms. The taunts of classmates and the constant reminders to “behave like a man” cast a shadow over his school years. These experiences left emotional scars but also cultivated resilience. Bhuvneshwar eventually adapted to societal expectations, a compromise that eased his journey but did little to quell his true identity.

Despite these hardships, Bhuvneshwar pursued his passions with determination. Earning a commerce degree and a diploma in fashion design, he found comfort and expression in the world of clothing and style. Fashion became more than just a career choice; it was his way of channelling creativity and individuality.

The leap into Entrepreneurship

With his certification in fashion design, starting a business felt like a natural progression. Bhuvneshwar was driven by the desire to meet diverse clothing needs through his unique designs. Yet, the path to entrepreneurship was riddled with challenges. From securing funding to understanding the nuances of managing a business, the obstacles were daunting. These difficulties were compounded by the lack of societal acceptance that often shadows members of the LGBTQIA+ community.

Navigating these complexities required not only determination but also guidance and support—resources that were not always readily available. It was during this time of uncertainty that Bhuvneshwar learnt about CYDA through a friend, a connection that would become a turning point in his life.

A beacon of hope

The intervention was nothing short of transformative. The organization’s commitment to empowering individuals like Bhuvneshwar through training and financial support offered him a lifeline. Entrepreneurship training program equipped him with the knowledge and tools necessary to succeed in the competitive world of fashion.

Through the training, Bhuvneshwar gained insights into crucial aspects of business management, including:

  • Availing Udyog Aadhar for small enterprises.
  • Developing effective business strategies.
  • Managing profit and loss accounts.
  • Choosing the right type of business and understanding its dynamics.
  • Creating quotations and managing savings effectively.

These lessons not only refined his understanding of business operations but also bolstered his confidence. For Bhuvneshwar, the most significant moment came when CYDA provided funding to kickstart his business. Coupled with his savings, he used this financial support to invest in Cotton and Rayon fabrics. This investment allowed him to introduce five to six new designs, including men’s shirts and women’s kaftans, thereby expanding his product line.

The road to growth

Clothing is a business that demands constant reinvestment to stay relevant and innovative. Over the past four to five years, Bhuvneshwar has consistently reinvested his profits into his business. This disciplined approach has ensured its sustainability and steady growth. The support  not only provided the initial boost but also instilled a sense of responsibility and direction, enabling him to navigate the intricacies of entrepreneurship.

Bhuvneshwar’s designs have found a loyal customer base that appreciates his creativity and craftsmanship. Importantly, many of his clients value the quality of his products regardless of his gender identity. This acceptance is an evidence to the slow but significant progress being made towards inclusivity in society.

Overcoming challenges

For members of the LGBTQIA+ community, securing funding and resources often feels like an uphill battle. Bhuvneshwar’s journey was no exception. However, CYDA’s intervention provided the crucial support needed to overcome these barriers. The organization’s belief in his potential gave him the confidence to step out and prove himself. While progress has been gradual, Bhuvneshwar remains optimistic about the future and encourages others in the community to seek financial independence and assert their identities.

A message of hope and gratitude

Today, Bhuvneshwar stands as a proud and successful fashion and costume designer. His journey, marked by resilience and determination, is an evidence to the transformative power of support and empowerment. He attributes much of his success to CYDA’s remarkable efforts in uplifting individuals like him.

“Clothing is not just a business for me; it’s a platform to express myself and to show that our community can achieve great things,” Bhuvneshwar shares.

He believes that organizations like CYDA play a pivotal role in fostering confidence and providing opportunities for marginalized communities. Bhuvneshwar’s story is a beacon of hope for the LGBTQIA+ community and a reminder that with the right support, dreams can indeed be transformed into reality. He continues to inspire others, urging them to step out, embrace their identities, and strive for financial independence. As he reflects on his journey, Bhuvneshwar remains deeply grateful for CYDA’s intervention, which not only changed his life but also empowered him to make a meaningful impact in his field.
